Marriage Registration in Thailand (AMERICAN-THAI)

United States citizens can get married in Thailand holding only a tourist visa and an Affirmation of Freedom from the American Embassy in Thailand. The Affirmation of Freedom is required to prove that the American citizen is not currently married and is now single and free to marry. The processing time is 5 working days.

Required documents:

U.S. Nationality:

  • Original passport
  • Copy of divorce certificate (if you have been divorced)
  • Affirmation of Freedom issued at the American Embassy in Thailand

Thai Nationality:

  • Original Thai ID card
  • Original house registration
  • Original divorce certificate (if you have been divorced)
  • Original birth certificate of your child (if you have a child with the American you are going to marry)

5 Steps to Marriage Registration:

Step 1: Book an appointment at the U.S. Embassy

  • Scan your passport and send it to VisaThai by email or LINE @visathai.
  • We will send you a list of requirements in response.

Step 2: Apply for Affirmation of Freedom (AoF)

  • We will meet you at the U.S. Embassy on the appointment date.
  • Re-check all documents and complete the AoF form.
  • Apply for the AoF at the U.S. Embassy (approximately 2 hours).

Step 3: Translate all embassy-issued documents into Thai language

  • The notarized affidavit is translated into Thai by a certified translation service provided by VisaThai.

Step 4: All documents certified at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

  • We will submit the notarized affidavit and Thai translations to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on your behalf.

Step 5: Register your marriage certificate

  • We will pick you up or meet you at the district office (Amphur) in Bangkok to have the marriage registered. We also prepare the interpreter and witness for the district office. After the marriage registration is complete, we send you back with a small gift from us.

Helpful Information

If you have plans to use the marriage certificate as a legal document in other countries, it is best to have it translated into English or your own language and have it notarized at the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs or at the American Embassy.

The American Embassy is not authorized to provide or recommend translation services, but there are various translation services nearby.

U.S. nationals who are married to Thai nationals do not automatically acquire Thai citizenship or Thai residency and will need to apply for a visa at Immigration and renew the visa every year. For more information about the Marriage Visa, visit the Marriage Visa section of our website here.
