Since 2013, we have helped more than 1,000 foreigners obtain retirement visas in Thailand. Rather than write another article about the requirements you already know, i.e. 50 years old, THB800,000 in Thai bank account or THB65,000 monthly income, we’re going to give you our first-hand experience of common obstacles that can either delay or completely thwart your efforts. Here is an anecdote for your information (and entertainment).
What comes first, the retirement visa or the bank account?
Clyde called us because he wanted to apply for a retirement visa but he could not show proof of a Thai bank account with THB800,000. He had entered Thailand with a tourist visa and had tried to open a bank account, but the bank told him he couldn’t open a bank account with a tourist visa. When he came to us, we helped him change his tourist visa to a Non-Immigrant O visa and helped him open a Thai bank account. Once he met all qualifications, we applied for and secured his retirement visa. Now we see Clyde every year when he brings us a dozen Krispy Kreme donuts when it’s time to renew his visa.
