Can a foreigner open a bank account in Thailand? Firstly, when it comes to banking for foreigners in Thailand there are exceptions to every rule, but in general, here’s where things stand as of this writing.
1. Visa eligibility
Tourist visa holders—including Visa-Exempt stamps and the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)—are no longer eligible to open bank accounts at most Thai banks in 2025.
Eligible visas generally include:
- Non-Immigrant B (Work Visa)
- Non-Immigrant O/O-A/O-X (Marriage/Retirement Visas)
- Non-Immigrant ED (Student Visa) — sometimes accepted but varies by branch
2. Document requirements
Most banks will ask for:
- Original passport with current visa stamp (valid)
- Thai long-term visa (copy of the visa sticker or extension stamp)
- Proof of Thai address (rental agreement, utility bill, or residence certificate)
- Thai SIM card / phone number
- Supporting letter (school, employer, or embassy, if you’re on an ED visa or need extra backing)
- Work permit (if you have one)
- Optional ID: home country driver’s license or state ID can help speed things up, but cannot substitute a valid passport
3. Foreigner-friendly Thai banks
- Bangkok Bank: largest network, solid English support
- Kasikorn Bank (KBank): modern mobile app, easy branch layout
- Siam Commercial Bank (SCB): wide reach, decent English service
- Krungthai Bank: state-owned, branch staff often familiar with foreigner accounts (prepare standard docs)
4. Applying for a bank account
Approval often comes down to the individual branch and bank rep assisting you. To avoid unnecessary delays and visits, here are a few tips to prepare for your branch visit:
- Call ahead to confirm they handle foreigner accounts and documentation required
- Choose a non-touristy area
- Take a Thai-speaking friend or interpreter for clarity
5. Prepare the initial deposit
Most bank will require a minimum deposit. Typically you’ll be opening a savings account, and usually this will require a THB500 deposit. However, each bank may vary so it is best to check ahead of time for the specific type of account you will be opening.
As is usual, individual experiences may vary. Two people with the exact same circumstances may get different outcomes at the same bank depending on which branch they go to. The best thing is to cover the basics and have lots of patience. Successfully opening a Thai bank account as a foreigner, while tedious, will make life in the land of smiles much easier.
