Many people on social media and online forums claim that PR in Thailand is out of reach. In reality, permanent residence is achievable if you meet the criteria and prepare ahead.
Who’s Eligible (At a Glance)
You must satisfy general conditions and then qualify under one PR category (e.g., Employment, Investment, Humanitarian/Family, Expert).
Status history: Hold a non-immigrant visa extended annually for at least 3 consecutive years prior to applying; maintain continuous lawful stay.
Employment continuity (Employment category): Typically ~3 years with a Work Permit and ≥1 year with your current employer at the time of application.
Income (Employment category):
- ≥80,000 THB/month for the last 2 years, or
- personal income tax paid ≥100,000 THB in each of the last 2 years.
- If 50,000–79,999 THB/month, applicants may still qualify when holding a director/chairman role and the company has ≥10M THB paid-in capital.
Language: Expect a Thai-language interview; basic conversational ability is required.
(Investment and Humanitarian categories have different financial/relationship proofs—for more details, read our Permanent Residence Services page here.)
Annual Quota & Timing
Thailand sets an annual nationality quota (commonly cited up to 100 approvals per nationality). Application windows are announced each year; in 2025 the window ran March 5 – May 15.
Should You Use an Agent?
A reputable agent can pre-check eligibility, assemble documents, and reduce errors. No agent can guarantee approval. Unofficial payments are not appropriate and not necessary when you’re eligible, properly documented, and applying within the window.
